Hebbar Kitchen - Pioneer in making video recipes

Cooking is an art form and a recipe is one person's opinion of how to create a dish however not the only way. Earlier we used to have moms and grandmoms and auntyes to explain recipes but as the new generation travels all over the world, it was hard to seek help from family. This has created the need of someone who can explain the recipes step by step. TV channel hace started multiple kitchen shows. Sanjeev Kapoors 'Khana Khajana' was a megahit in 90's. But next generation found it challenging to find a specific time for program like cooking show and hence the need of video recipes became vital. Video recipes on social media is now a new craze.
Talking about the research Subrat Kar, CEO and Co-founder of Vidooly said, “India is right now at the centre of Facebook’s growth strategy. With around 142 million monthly active users in the country, it is a platform that brands or video creators cannot ignore. Despite YouTube still being the go-to platform for most video creators in the country, Facebook is fast catching up and attracting new creators to its platform.”. Facebook can be a great platform that can give immediate feedback from the audience. Creators can then incorporate it in their overall content strategy and try to leverage other platforms like YouTube, Twitter and Instagram.

Hebbar kitchen is a pioneer in making video recipes. Their videos get highest hits for all traditional Indian recipes.

1. Tell us about yourself.

Hebbar's Kitchen is managed and maintained by me (Archana) and by husband Sudarshan. We currently live in Australia but we both are from Udupi, Karnataka. Hebbar's Kitchen started as a hobby which later turned into passion cum profession. My husband who currently manages his own IT consulting firm, works and manages Hebbar's Kitchen technical aspects on his free time.

2. How long have you been into cooking.

My Video blogging started last year in February. As Hebbar, we just completed a year but my blogging is going on almost for 18 months now. I use to take step by step photos and post on my free wordpress website but there wasn't any traction.

To be honest, I was inspired by Buzzfeed tasty videos. But when we started this, there were hardly any Indian channels (or could be but not popular) showcasing the Indian recipes with short-length videos. Having said that, step by step photo blogging and traditional 10 - 15 mins videos where hugely popular. Moreover, there were already established players in both areas but they were away from exploring Facebook potential. Hence, I thought of giving a try to shorter videos and the response was amazing.

4. How was the response from the beginning of your journey till now?

The response for these short videos wasn't that great in the initial stage as I was lagging behind in video shooting and editing part. However, it was much better compared to my step by step photo blog post. I was getting quite a good feedback from my viewers, which motivated me to work harder and learn how to edit the videos. Previously, I used to shoot videos from my iPhone attached to selfie stick and with my personal laptop. The video quality wasn't that great but it was a good start.  Later, my husband gifted me a DSLR camera, professional video editing software and high end desktop machine to shoot and edit higher quality videos. this motivated me to work harder and harder and harder.  As a result, I invested some time to learn how to edit more professionally. Also, I make sure my husband watches all the videos, before I upload. A second opinion always helps to fine tune the video better. In short the response is amazing and we were thrilled to see us in top 6 most viewed Indian channels in Facebook and top most in health and food channels in Facebook.

5. How do you go about shooting these videos?

I shoot these videos with tripod. So there is no cameraman!! Most of the recipes and videos are done by myself and for complex recipes I seek my husband's help to direct/choreograph the shooting. Having said that all photos are taken by my Husband.

6. Any funny or interesting feedbacks that you have got?

Yes there are several.. I get so many videos these days, where man readers/parents share their kids browsing/loving/enjoying our videos. Also, I wear a ring on my thumb and many readers ask me whether it brings any luck to me.. It is just an jewellery to me. Moreover, I get even photos people buying that thumb ring and started wearing it.

7. What is own your speciality?

I am from South India and South Indian breakfast recipes is my specialty especially the Udupi cuisine.

8. Can you share some challenges that you have faced so far while making these short videos?

Time and expectations is the biggest challenge for us. We are always short of time and we get so many recipe requests + dietary requirements which we are finding it little difficult to manage.

9. Which is your favourite recipe that you want to share with us?

My favourite recipe is Rasgulla :)
